The man of straw is Jonsson, a gentle inarticulate man of fifty, who lives in a small New Zealand town ekeing out a precarious living. Then during the course of one summer events occur that profoundly alter the relationships within Jonsson's family and leave each of its members tragically scarred. These events are seen through the eyes of the family's two daughters: Miranda, the elder, who teaches, is enveloped in self-centred cynicism and is engaged to a man from a grander background; and Ros, a tomboy who is ready to grow up.
