The Featherson Incident , as it came to be known, was one of the most traumatic events in New Zealand's military history. In February 1943 a group of Japanese prisoners of war apparently mutinied in a camp at Featherson, in the southern part of New Zealand's North Island. Guards fired, and 48 prisoners were killed.
