Summary, etc Black Angus: 150 Years in New Zealand commemorates the 150th anniversary of Angus beef in this country. Since the arrival of a mere handful of bulls and cows at Bluff in Southland in 1863, Angus has become the dominant breed of beef cattle, with stock numbers now in the tens of thousands. Author Geoff Bryant travelled throughout the country interviewing and photographing many of the people and places featured in the book, and also researching the early history and sourcing numerous archival images, many from private collections. He writes of the prime breeding stock that laid the foundations for the growth of Angus studs in New Zealand, as well as the importance of shows, national sales, beef expos, Angus youth programmes and the growing influence of on-farm auctions. Prominent too are the early stud breeders and their families, many still farming the same land, the auctioneers, and those who have been instrumental in guiding the breed into the twenty-first century with the shift of focus to commercial beef, the gate-to-plate concept and developing the Angus brand. The book is a broad-sweeping, wonderfully illustrated tribute to the breed and many of the people who have nurtured it through the years.<br/>
