520 | _a"James Herries Beattie (1881-1972) grew up in Gore and began his historical investigations while on the staff of the Mataura Ensign (now The Ensign). He wrote widely on his historical researches, which covered Canterbury, Otago and Southland, and - very unusually for his day - began not with Captain Cook but the very first humans who arrived at least 1000 years ago. Beattie's researches on place names in Otago and Southland resulted in two books, published in 1948 and 1949. The present volume on names given by European settlers and explorers was the earlier of the two."--Publisher's preface. | ||
